PowerVocab personalizes the English vocabulary learning for competitive exams and personal improvement.

This app is built by students of MIT based on the latest research from MIT Computer Science and Web Semantics Lab.

It uses latest machine learning algorithms and web semantic techniques to collapse billions of possibilities into comprehensible probabilistic profile information, in real-time.

It completely controls the learning environment, so that you do not have to plan your learning approach. All you need to do is interact.

The more you practice, the more it learns about you and figures out words that are difficult for you. It ensures you achieve the top scores in competitive exams like GMAT, SAT, GRE or in your professional work.

Features:

  1. 600+ words ( common words from competitive exams ) in the lite version
  2. Intelligent algorithm to customize the learning experience.
  3. Key aspect of the app is the practice session.
  4. Words in practice session are customized based on your expertise level, and your comfort level with the words.
  5. Two parameters are used to profile users. “Expert Level” of the user and “Commitment level” of the user. ExpertLevel: determined based on the interactions with the words. CommitmentLevel: determined based on the interactions with the iPhone App/AI engine

Cons

  1. The “replay” voice speaker icon after the test are not working currently
  2. There’s more “simplified” report that can be understood easily by young & old
  3. The report cannot be sent to anyone via email or social networking so that parents, teacher or others can monitor your progress
  4. There’s no achievement badges to mark the person’s accomplishments
  5. There are no “add on” words currently, it will be excellent if they give in app purchase for more words to learn
  6. There are no option to have multiple users to use the same application, for example to gauge progress of two person with one device.
  7. Some of the choices in describing the words are too complex to understand

Overall, this application is highly recommended for learning new words for young & old especially for those students who needs new words for their English composition or letter writing!

I will recommend this application to all English speaking students who needs to score high in their exams and it’s FREE!

Note: The name of this application seemed to had changed to IntelliVocab for GRE and GMAT
